Breakout – Christmas Chaos
Game Date: 18/12/2019
Team: Amy & Ian
“Christmas cheer is at an all time low. It’s been weeks since you sent your wish list to the North Pole and you still haven’t received a reply. News reports are saying that Santa Claus has disappeared and that a world famous detective is now on the case to save Christmas. You’ve taken it upon yourself to come to the detective’s office to help investigate further to ensure your spot on the nice list.
Christmas has taken residence with the detective office and it is clear that this is very much a temporary affair. The room is decorated nicely but lacked the pizazz that is needed from an all-encompassing Christmas room.
The room was not the largest space, any more than 4 people is going to feel cramped. Lighting was good and we had no trouble in that respect.
A game that started linear and progressed to become more open in the later stages of the game. Puzzles consisted of logic, observation, deduction and searching and were certainly geared towards a younger audience.
The puzzles were mainly on theme, with the mix of Christmas and Detective throwing a couple of strange puzzle choices into the mix, especially earlier on in the game.
Generally, the puzzles, whilst fairly standard in their design, were mainly logical and came with nice ah-ha moments. There was a time where items were used more than once, and this could have been executed in a slicker way.
Flow was lacking, and the game felt rather slow in its pacing. Whether this was down to the temporary nature of the game not having its wrinkles ironed out or not I’m not sure, but I’d suspect it was the culprit.
Signposting was adequate, with some puzzles having excellent signposting giving clear and concise answers, to others where we were left very much alone to “connect the dots”
There was a nice use of tech within the room, this provided a nice searching element and I could see kids absolutely loving it!
All in all, a festive room that is clearly just there “for the season” but still, it didn’t fail to entertain us and we came out satisfied and feeling a bit more festive than when we entered!
Clues were delivered via a screen
Our game host was enthusiastic, delivered a good brief and was excellent in her timings with clues
Did we escape?
Yes, in about 39 minutes.
