The Escape Room Guys – The Grand Heist
Game Date: 18/03/2022
Team: Amy & Ian
Duration: 60 Minutes
“Your target is a high security bank based in Derby. A large deposit has been tracked so it is time to get the old team back together for one final heist. You have just 60 minutes worth of access to the facility. Use your time wisely.”
The Grand Heist was decorated very cleanly, and whilst not the most flashy room, it’s beauty lay in it’s simplicity. Anything more would have been wasted and the decoration fit the theme perfectly, and was finished to a high standard, with quality set build, perfection in the design and a bright airy space in which to play. The room was very well lit and spacious, with more than enough room for a team of 6.
There was a good sense of discovery to the room, and ever with the tried and tested “Heist” theme, there were still innovative and interesting moments.
Game play is really where “The Grand Heist” stood out. An expertly designed game, which funtions with a “Collect as much as you can” mechanic rather than a strict escape.
This is such a good method of game play as escape rooms are getting more well known, so returning and experienced players are becoming a lot more commonplace. This room will serve to satifsy both newbies and enthusiasts.
The game started linear, but soon transitioned into a completley open game. The puzzles were incredibly varied, and touched on all aspects of puzzle solving. Math, Word, Decoding, Physical, Team work, observation… the mix was excelllent.
Every single puzzle was well in theme, and had excellent Ah-ha moments, with logical conclusions. From the very first puzzle we had confidence and faith in the design of the room. We put our trust in the designers and this just made the game oh so playable and fun.
The puzzles were all beautiful in their logic, so well designed that there was never any ambiguity in them and the padlocks just seemed to fall open under our fingers.
Signposting was a dream, perfectly subtle, yet there was everything you needed to guide you to solve the puzzles within the game.
Flow was snappy, yet relaxed and puzzles just melted into each other to create one of the smoothest games we’ve played in a while.
This was just one of those games that just plays. No qualms, no sticky moments, and most importantly no frustrations. A real gem and a bit of a unknown game in Derby, I urge you to give The Escape Guys a go!!
