Extreme Escape – Pirate Ship. Game Date 31/07/2016. Team: Amy, Ian, Michael, Ste & Lyndsey
Well! Yesterday didn’t go as I planned, at ALL! I had planned to go play Extreme Escape, then go grab some tea with my team mates before heading home. We came out of the pirate ship SO pumped that we immediately booked a game at Lockin Real Escape games in Manchester… and then another! (All will become apparent in the reviews!) So a 1 game day turned into a 3 game day, and it was AMAZING!
We arrived at Stanley Hall Farm, which is set in lush countryside in Disely, surrounded by rolling green hills and sheep, lots of sheep! As a bit of a change today I was playing in a team of 5, which is a big team for me! We made a good team though I think, so I’ll be calling on them again for Dungeon of Doom at Clue HQ and Bad Clown at Escape Quest!
Theme:
“A long time ago on the Carribean seas sailed the Spanish Galleon, Castoria.
Captained by Zak Barrow and crewed by a gang of murderers & merciless cutthroats.
Plundering ships of all kinds along India’s Malabar coast, Barrow was a Pirate, one of the most infamous Pirates of all time.
Barrow’s ship Castoria battled with the India Merchant, a huge treasure ship of 350 tons.
In rough seas, the merchant vessel fired but due to a sudden ocean swell, the shot missed its mark.
The pirates threw their grappling hooks, bringing the two ships together.
And rapidly boarded the ship, soon Captain Barrow was in the possession of one of the greatest pirate treasures ever.
The ship disappeared in 1722 and was not seen again until now!”
Extreme Escape really have gone all out on the theme here, it is PERFECT. It really is like stepping on the decks of a pirate ship, complete with cannons, parrots and skeletons! OH… and rum, plenty of rum. It’s so detailed, you may spend the first 5 minutes just staring in awe! It even smells like a pirate ship, a woody smell with a hint of rum!
This has got to be one of the best decorated rooms I have ever been in, everything was spot on to the theme, and it was incredibly immersive, and had a “pre-show” which to me is a big, big plus!
Game Play:
This was a 90 minute game, so there is plenty to keep the team occupied. Whilst the game is non-linear, it didn’t really feel it, which is a bonus to me!
There is a brilliant mix of puzzles in this room, one of which got our team stuck for quite a while, as we went all round the houses trying to get the answer! There are some slightly physical tasks, mental, observational…. you name it, they have it! There’s some really neat tech in the room as well, all of which was concealed to keep in with the theme of the room
Clue System:
The clue system at Extreme Escape is a unique one, there are coins hidden around the room, which you can use to pay for hints, we did use both of our hints and Jess/Graham will nudge you in the right direction too. Hints are delivered via a screen, with the captain’s voice alerting you to their presence
Game Host:
Jess & Graham own Extreme Escape and also host the games, they were so very warm and welcoming. It’s worthy to note, that of a weekend Extreme Escape will let you BYOB to make a real party of the game! It’s always lovely to meet owners with a clear passion for the game, and Jess & Graham have that in abundance!
Did we escape?
Yes, in 74 minutes! A respectable time, I would have happily escaped at 89 minutes, as the environment was so perfect I wanted to spend every minute in there! You also get a team photo printed at the end of your game, which was a lovely personal touch.
