Extremescape – The Lost Tomb.
Location: Disley
Game Date 26/02/2017.
Team: Amy & Ian
I was a very lucky lady when Ian said he’d treat me to Extremescape’s The Lost Tomb for a Valentine’s present! We were SO excited to try it and had read, and heard rave reviews from every person who’d played it so far… would it live up to expectations…
Theme:
“Your team of adventurers & archaeologists, enter an abandoned gold mine in the heart of the Mexican mountains, your mission is to find the hidden gold.
Legend says that the holder of the hidden gold of El Narangel will find the Lost Tomb.
The miners left subtle clues & hints, if you use all your skills you may find the hidden gold and ultimately the Lost Tomb but be careful they the miners won’t give up their gold easily.”
Wow. Wow. Wow. I think my jaw dropped when we walked into the room!
This room was like walking onto a movie set, every inch of the room was perfectly decorated, giving total immersion. (even the FLOOR was themed) The set was kept simple, which is perfect for the “gold mine” setting as too much clutter wouldn’t have been found in an abandoned goldmine, there was nothing out of place, or off theme. Further into the game on discovery of the Lost Tomb, theming kept it’s high level, with sarcophagus, totems and the occasional cheeky jump scare!
I can’t say much more other than it was perfect, atmospheric and 100% immersive! You have to see this room to believe it, nothing has been overlooked. It really does transport you to another world for 90 minutes.
Game Play:
The game was all about discovery, a real hands on game that delivered great puzzles, and a lot of them!
After a stunning opener to the room, with a puzzle to get into the goldmine, which warms you up nicely, it’s onto the main game!
A brilliant mix of logic, word, observational and Math. Each puzzle was perfectly logical. A fairly open game, which came together into linearity to conclude the game. Perfection. A fantastic mix of tech and padlocks, with all the tech being intrinsic to the theme of the room – you get by for a great portion of this room actually doing things (that you would have to do in an abandoned gold mine) amongst solving puzzles, riddles and opening padlocks!
The room had a wonderful flow, the only times we slowed down were due to our mistakes and lack of observation… and at times over-complication!
The immersion in this room was second to none, I’m a big fan of the uncharted games and this was like living out a level from the game… I actually said to Ian at one point “Let’s hope there’s no shoreline round the corner” – When things like that happen in a room it’s quite magical!
I can’t recommend this puzzle enough for enthusiasts and newbies alike. I would take numbers down for more experienced players however, to make sure you experience EVERY moment in this game as it is truly something special!
Clue System:
Clues were delivered via a screen with a loud whip-crack noise to accompany! Additional hints and story telling were delivered via a disembodied voice in the room!
Game Host:
Jess and Graham were brilliant hosts, Graham briefed us fully before we went in and Clues were delivered with precision! Letting us figure stuff out on our own but giving us nudges in the right direction when needed! We could have chatted ALL night about escape rooms with Jess and Graham, they clearly have a passion for games, and their own rooms!
Did we escape?
Yes, in 76 minutes! (The Lost Tomb is a 90 minute game)
