The Escaporium – Operation Moonshine.
Location: Halifax
Game Date 06/08/2017.
Team: Amy & Ian
Theme:
“It’s the tail end of the Prohibition era in Chicago and Al Capone has a stranglehold on all the Bootleg liquor in the city. As the newest members of Bugsy’s gang, Da’ Boss needs you to prove yourself and steal something right from under Scarface’s nose! Don’t let him down, or you’ll be sleeping with the fishes!”
A really unique theme, that is fully realised in the decoration of the room, it was just brilliant! The speak-easy is a beautifully decorated bar with so much detail, entirely dedicated to theme and very immersive… it made me want a cocktail! The attention to detail is intricate and no stone is left unturned, with period pieces of furniture and props! A really gorgeous room
The room is incredibly spacious and would be comfortable for 6 (in the early stages of the game it’s a little more squished, but that is not a problem!)
Game Play:
The game started off linear, and then BAM it was SO open, with SO much to do (I was a bit overwhelmed to start off with) but the game is so intelligently designed, it gives you clear goals to work towards so you can keep track of your progress working up to the (wonderful) meta-puzzle
The puzzles covered every base, with maths, logic, observation, searching, code breaking, physical, word…. if you can think of a puzzle type… it was in there! Just wonderful and truly engaging in its game play. There was a good mix of tech and padlocks (well, there were lots of padlocks, so I was happy) But where tech was used, it was part of an excellent puzzle so the delivery was spot on!
The flow was great, we barely stopped the entire time, and when we did, it was for our own misgivings and not that of the room. Every single puzzle was logical, in theme and had excellent ah-ha moments… especially the meta-puzzle that once all the parts came together it was a joy to solve. (and as this is the game that keeps on giving, there was another meta puzzle moments later of a completely different type! EXCELLENT!)
All in all this was an excellent, solid, enjoyable game with MASSES of puzzles and enough to keep even the biggest teams entertained for the entire hour!
Enthusiasts – take a 3 or 4. Newbies, take 5 or 6 it’s an overwhelming amount of work for the less experienced players (but don’t let that put you off, it’s a must do in Halifax!)
