Unescapable – Edith

Unescapable – Edith.
Location: Derby
Game Date 14/08/2017.
Team: Amy & Ian

edithOK. Let’s preface this by say Edith is a scary room. It really is… and it’s exhilarating! If you’re in doubt, or want to discuss the “scare level” I would suggest contacting the guys at Unescapable, or send me a private message… Let’s just say I screamed MORE than once! Parts of Edith take place in complete darkness, with loud noises.

Theme:
“This portal was shut down after one of our researchers never returned. We have now re-opened it in order to find her and bring her back. From the limited information we have, we know that the portal has landed in 1872 in an old dressmakers workshop. We need to find out what happened to her, but we’ve heard screams coming from the portal and we’re too scared to go ourselves.”

Theming again was superb. Perfectly fitting for an abandoned dressmakers workshop, with nothing out of place. It was superbly eerie from the moment we passed through the portal (which indecently was a lot of fun and very akin to The Crystal Maze!) into 1872. The sense of atmosphere in the room was astounding and set us on edge from the get go. The build up of tension and dimly lit set created an immersive experience. Yes it’s dim, it’s run down, and it’s perfect.
The game takes on a scare-maze like feel to it’s later stage, with small corridors that disorientate you and lead to more and more well dressed (forgive the pun) sets.
A brilliantly immersive, scary and fun experience!

Game Play:
The game had a wonderful flow, with an excellent mix of puzzles, with logic and physical “doing things” puzzles being the flavour for Edith. All the puzzles were superbly logical and had great ah-ha moments!
The physical puzzles were fun and used good team work tactics.
The whole game encouraged team work and at times, left you with no option but to split up in a dark and scary place to work on puzzles.
There is a fantastic twist in this game, which without spoiling anything would really make big groups have to come to a hard decision! (We LOVED this aspect!)
A truly fantastic game that marries escape rooms and scare mazes together to create an unnerving and scary experience. One that I won’t forget for a long time!
Enthusiasts, brave it. Take 2! Newbies, there is safety in numbers, take 4 or more!

Clue System:
Clues were delivered via a walkie talkie

Game Host:
Joe & Stu were our game hosts (and also the owners, and game designers) and they are hilarious, really great guys with excellent comedy and banter in their pre-game brief. In fact, the sense of comedy throughout Unescapable really appealed to me! In such a serious setting as a time travel facility, the humour is really well done!
Joe & Stu ran our game well, with Joe delivering hints only when we really needed them! Excellent hosting

Did we escape?
Yes, in 42 minutes!
