Escape – Darker Side of Hull

Escape – Darker Side of Hull
Location: Hull
Game Date: 05/08/2021
Team: Amy, Ian & Nick
Duration: 60 Minutes

darker

Theme:
“You are usually more than happy to take the night shift at Hull’s History Museum but you have arrived to find the whole building in darkness and no sign of the previous shift’s staff.
You must restore the power and investigate.

Gather your team but be careful, you may discover more about Hull’s dark past than you wanted to.”

Darker Side of Hull took place in a fairly well decorated room, which had some decent theming elements, there was a fair amount of stuff to look at and it did give a museum vibe. However, the room was looking a little bit worn and worse for wear, general upkeep is important to giving a slick overall finish.
The game starts with a split start, so Ian was locked away for the first 10 minutes or so, fortunately we worked well to get him out and he wasn’t stuck in the closet for too long.
The space itself is fairly large, 6 players wont have a problem, although there are smaller areas.
Lighting is OK (once we… sorry IAN found the light switch) and torches were provided for the darker areas.

Game Play:
A linear game that consisted mainly of searching, observation and logic puzzles.
Puzzles were mostly good, with nothing that blew us out the water, but most puzzles being wholly logical and fair.
The puzzles had nice ah-ha moments, and a few times I reminded myself about the phrase “Occam’s razor” it’s all to easy to overcomplicated things as an enthusiast.
The game flowed well, whilst not a fast paced, or heart poundingly exciting game, this is a solid game which delivers puzzles consistently throughout the game.
Signposting was fair, not loads but also not completely without.
Overall, a decent game that pulls from the local history without becoming too preachy or trite. It’s certainly going to appeal to tourists and newer teams.

Clue System:
Clues were delivered via screen in the room

Game Host:
Our game host was good, friendly and delivered a good brief and prompt clues when needed

Covid19 Safety:
Masks were required in communal areas, but not in the room. Hand sanitizer was available and the room was clean

Did we escape?
