Project Breakout – The Antidote.
Location: Brighouse
Game Date 24/09/2017.
Team: Amy & Ian
Project Breakout is located at ROKT – which is an old mill, and features bouldering, nerf arenas, indoor abseiling and other sporty pursuits! If this tickles your fancy you could easily make a full day out of it. There is plenty to do.
Due to it being in this facility, Project Breakout is situated up a few flights of stairs, nothing too taxing but just something to be aware of, it certainly gets you warmed up for the game!
Theme:
“You have been selected to take part in an experiment. Details as to the nature of the experiment cannot be revealed until the day of arrival. All we ask is that live subjects enrol. Not for the faint hearted.
This is a test of skill, cunning and bravery. Not everyone will complete the challenge, but those who do will be rewarded with the ultimate prize! More details will be provided in your briefing should you choose to take the challenge.
Do you have what it takes to beat the experiment?”
SUCH a good premise, and the game starts before you even enter the room, when you are requested to start the trial.
The story telling in the pre-game and once you get into the room are brilliant, and very immersive and this continues throughout the hour.
The room itself is large, and well decorated, it’s a sort of study, but this is at odds with the actual game, which is not what you would expect to “go” with a study, but it really works! With nothing left out of place, and with almost everything in the room being used within the game, there are absolutely no red herrings within the room.
Game Play:
A linear game where the end goal is not to escape, but find the antidote.
This game is a dream to play, with all different types of puzzles, which all contribute to the end goal of finding out what antidote you need to take.
The puzzles are observation, logic, code-breaking & a couple of “doing stuff puzzles” – It’s almost clear as to what you’ve got to do with the 2 doing stuff puzzles but you can’t do it straight away, this is such a lovely mechanic in the game, as when the time comes you know instantly what you have to do.
All the puzzles are so, so logical and have brilliant Ah-ha moments, and I loved the way they all factor into the final meta-puzzle within the room, this is something that you keep chipping away at, it’s logic is flawless and makes perfect sense.
The flow was wonderful and every puzzle lead onto exactly where you expected, and there was no sticking points, no leaps of logic or no frustration whatsoever. Just excellent game design.
Enthusiasts, you’ll love the excellence in the game design.
Newbies, this is a PERFECT beginner room.
Clue System:
Clues were delivered via a microphone in the room
Game Host:
Benn was our game host (and also the owner) and he was wonderful, we could have chatted all evening about escaping! He clearly has a massive passion for escaping and that shows in his enthusiasm and game design! He ran our game really well and delivered hints exactly when we needed them (I think we only used 1!)
Did we escape?
Yes, in 34 minutes. (a quick time, but every single minute was SO enjoyable)
