Cryptology – The Mysterious Case of Hugh Dunnit
Location: Sheffield
Game Date: 07/08/2021
Team: Amy & Ian
Duration: 60 Minutes
Theme:
“You and your team must investigate the murder of Hugh Dunnitt and find out why he was killed and who killed him.
Unlock all of the clues, but be careful. There is something else afoot.
Investigate what’s happening on West Street, and you may become embroiled in a struggle for more than just the truth!”
Hugh Dunnit (can we just stop for a moment and appreciate the pun… Ok… moving on) is decorated with a great attention to detail, clean and well finished with enough to create a great sense of immersion but not too much to distract the player.
The premise for this game has a GREAT twist on the age old “murder mystery” which leads to a clever transition between sets, a better story and a really unique game.
The space was big enough for the maximum team size, lighting was never a problem.
Game Play:
An open game that was skilfully designed, with a wide range of puzzles, word, observation, searching, and logic being the main stays.
All the puzzles were perfectly in theme and served to further the story, and there was a lovely use of tech in the most appropriate way possible within the game, this was really unique and fun to use!
Hugh Dunnit manages to combine puzzling very well with story-telling, and the actions you do effect what happens within the multi-media in the game.
The puzzles were all incredibly logical, fair and solvable and had wonderful ah-ha moments that came thick and fast throughout the game, with no ambiguity.
The flow was wonderful, and paced very well with the addition of mid-game story “interjections” which made the game cohesive and story driven.
Signposting was excellent, with there being subtle signposting that guides, but not steers.
Overall, Hugh Dunnit is a wonderful experience, with a fuss free style of gameplay that is sure to get any newbie hooked on escaping, and please enthusiasts for the slick game design
